A Study of Iranian EFL Teachers’ and Students’ Perceptions and Actual Treatment of Culture in EFL Classes
It has long been argued that language and culture are strongly linked to each other. Bearing in mind the need for investigating culture teaching in different foreign language teaching contexts, this mixed method study is an inquiry into teachers and students’ perceptions of culture teaching in the Iranian EFL institutes. Furthermore, the study aimed at investigating the possible mismatch between students and teachers’ perceptions of the role culture plays in language learning and how teachers implement culture in their teaching practices. To this end, 200 teachers and students filled out the questionnaires and 40 teachers and learners were interviewed and finally, 15 teaching sessions were observed. The results revealed that although both teachers and students considered culture teaching and learning important, they prioritized language-learning objectives to culture learning objectives. Furthermore, teachers’ real practice in the classroom approved of the results and findings. Ultimately, except some minor differences, the mismatch between teachers and learners’ perceptions was not statistically significant.
